I have to start by saying that I am not at all gonna knock other Boss Babes in this post! I have a huge respect for my fellow entrepreneurs and anyone who is pursuing their dreams. But part of us meeting our audience and making those sales is knowing what sets us apart- what makes us the right fit for our client segment. I had previously detailed this in an Instagram post and was really compelled to expand on it, so here we go!
I Don’t Drink Coffee
I have never had an intentional sip of coffee (even though I worked as a barista for two years!) because I don’t really like hot drinks in general. I am learning with tea and have a weak spot for the sugar in hot chocolate, but I think I will be happy to not drink coffee for the rest of my life!
My source of caffeine is Coca-Cola (not the most health conscious decision, I know!) and I would never drink it to kick-start my morning. So all those posts I see about things like “don’t talk to me until I’ve had my coffee” simply don’t speak to me. And so I don’t say those things to my followers!
2. I Am Not A Mom, and I Don’t Want To Be
So many female entrepreneurs are getting into the business of making their own business from their homes where they are raising children. Each of these women are godesses! However, I am not one of them. And I feel excluded from a lot of entrepreneurial communities sometimes because not only do I not have kids, but I don’t want them. This can be tough for some people to understand, so I hope that through my work I can get to know people and they can learn to understand my perspective on it.
3. I’m A Professional Theatre Artist
If you’ve never worked with me in social media, maybe you’ve seen me singing and dancing on stage! Yes, I am an actor. And a whole lot more! I have done almost every job in the theatre (except design- I do NOT have the skills to design costumes or sets or lights!) and I use all of this experience to help me in social media. I learned the art of storytelling from theatre, and now I get to apply it to the stories my clients want to tell. That is the thing that sets me apart most significantly!
4. I Teach Burlesque
This ties a little bit into my theatre background but the thing that sets it apart is this: burlesque is an active practice of empowerment and acceptance. We accept ourselves and each other where we are and celebrate our full, true selves. This has definitely made me a better #bossbabe because I am able to celebrate myself and acknowledge where I am at. I don’t spend too much time berating my mistakes or lamenting the tasks left unaccomplished. Plus, I learned to prioritize myself so that I can live in the present and be there for my clients.
5. I Am Not Religious
This is a significant difference between myself and other female entrepreneurs, particularly in the USA market. I don’t believe in God, and a lot of the messages I see from others are about God showing the way, thanking him for his generosity, etc. And I absolutely have no problem with that! I think that people can come together across all beliefs to make something wonderful. It just is not my way!
Now it’s your turn to think: what makes you different from everyone else out there? Make sure to embrace your differences and stop trying to sound like anyone else!
